Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. Normally, cells grow, divide, and die in a controlled way, but cancer disrupts this balance. When cellular mutations occur in the DNA, the body's regulatory mechanisms fail to control cell division, leading to the formation of tumors (solid masses) or blood-based cancers like leukemia. If left untreated, cancerous cells can invade nearby tissues or spread to distant parts of the body (metastasis), making the disease more difficult to treat.
