Hoof-Centric Origin:

• Dairy: 80%–90% of cases involve hoof lesions.

• Beef (Feedlot): 70%–75% originate in the hoof.

Non-Hoof Origins: Upper-leg injuries, joint pain/sepsis, and swelling at injection sites.

Industry Variability:

• Pasture-based Dairy: ~8% prevalence.

• Confinement/Indoor Dairy: 15%–55% prevalence.

• Beef Feedlot: 5%–17% prevalence.

System Factors: Prevalence varies by production system (pasture vs. indoor), housing (free stall, tie stall), milking system, and lying surface.

Lesion Distribution:

• Indoor: Digital dermatitis is most prevalent, followed by sole ulcers and white line disease.

• Pasture: White line disease and sole lesions (hemorrhages, thin soles, trauma) are most common.

Impact: Hoof lesions may be present in 25%–80% of indoor cows, though they do not always result in clinical lameness.

Sector Concerns: Affects cow-calf operations, backgrounding, finishing feedlots, and processing plants.

Feedlot Impact: Ranked as the second most treated condition after respiratory disease; accounts for 16%–40% of health problems and 3%–11% of mortality.

Primary Causes: Upper-leg lameness, joint/deep digital sepsis, foot rot, and sole lesions.

Risk Factors: Gender, age, season of placement, and presence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD).
