Tracheal collapse is a chronic, progressive airway disorder seen primarily in small and toy breed dogs, especially Yorkshire Terriers. The condition develops when the cartilage rings that normally support the trachea weaken, causing the airway to flatten and narrow. As airflow becomes restricted, affected dogs often develop a characteristic “goose-honk” cough that is highly suggestive of the disease.
Clinical signs are commonly triggered or worsened by excitement, heat, exercise, eating, or pressure on the neck. Diagnosis relies on imaging techniques such as fluoroscopy, radiography, and tracheoscopy, which help identify the location and severity of airway collapse. Most dogs can be managed successfully with medical therapy, including cough suppressants, bronchodilators, weight control, and use of a harness instead of a collar. Severe or refractory cases may require surgical intervention using extraluminal rings or intraluminal stents to restore airway stability and improve breathing.
